Exclusive: CF Strategy Team Announced

Alexandra Paterson has announced the wider CF strategy team which will help bring the Conservatives to victory in 2015 and also make CF a very successful organisation. This among other future plans for CF were decided last night at the 'most successful national executive meeting ever'.

Paterson exclusively told #ThingsElliottSays "Following on from last night's successful National Executive and Leadership Team meetings at CCHQ ... the following appointments to the Strategy Team:

NUS Officer: Eimhear Macfarlane
Training Officer: Ben Woodward
CF Women: Aisha Vance-Grimard
Constitutional Officer: Simon Harley
European Relationship Manager: Laurence Chacksfield
Social Action Officer: Sarah-Louise Cooper
Forward Planning Officer: James Price
Universities Officer: Calum James Stewart
Postgraduates Officer: Hamish Stewart
Fundraising Officer: Cordelia Roberts Evans
Internal International Events: Jon Wilson
Young Professionals: Michael Bull"

The last position for the national executive was also announced with Hannah Rawbone being appointed as the campaigns officer. Hannah exclusively told #ThingsElliottSays "I am thrilled to be part a great CF national executive. I’m confident under the leadership of Alexander Paterson we can take CF from strength to strength, recruiting more members and campaigning in seats that need our help. In an election year it is crucial we continue to campaign on the issues that really matter; telling as many people about our long term economic plan and playing our part in securing a conservative majority in 2015."

In the opinion of the majority of young  Conservatives #TeamPaterson has got off to a great start. One CFer has told #ThingsElliottSays "This is most likely to be the start of an era of CF doing something. An idea kindled by Oliver Cooper and realised in Alexandra Paterson. Like Margaret Thatcher and Keith Jospeh perhaps, but with more KFC."

Breaking News: Cooper Officially Announces He Will Not Re-Stand

The National CF Chairman has officially announced that he will no be re-standing in the up and coming CF Elections

Oliver Cooper Announced on Facebook:

"It's been a great honour for me to be National Chairman of Conservative Future for the last year. CF is the largest youth wing in the United Kingdom, and in the last year has become larger still: with 75% more university branches, with branches covering 40% more parliamentary constituencies, and with more members up and down the country than we've had at any point in our history. We also have a better image in the media, a higher profile internationally, and a stronger relationship with CCHQ than ever before.

"Most importantly, CF is having a greater impact on the campaign trail, from local and regional campaign days to the stellar success of RoadTrip2015. Our successes over the past year have been great, but the year leading up to a general election, is a new challenge, and these successes need to be built on with a new team. As such, despite so many people asking me to re-stand – which I still take as a form of flattery – I will not be seeking re-election as National Chairman.

"Both with gratitude for the past and confidence in the future, I'd like to thank everyone that's been involved in the last year to make our great organisation greater still. There will be elections over the next month to elect my successor and fill the other leadership positions; I will offer my unqualified support and assistance to whoever is elected, so CF can help make sure our country has a more Conservative future."

Cooper with CF Chair hopeful Alexandra Paterson.
In the opinion of #ThingsElliottSays Cooper has been the best CF Chairman in memory. This is further true for even some the grey bearded thirty year olds of Conservative Future. Oliver has been very successful in inspiring a lot of people and setting up a lot of branches across the country.

But despite this giant leap forward made under Cooper there is still a lot to do. Apart from the gentleman that is Rob Manning, Oliver had to struggle with people on his committee who hated him for no reason other than paranoia. It is with relief these people are now gone and in all likelihood will not receive any office under a new administration. The focus for the new Chairman is to work with their much more agreeable committee which is prepared to actually do their roles. There role is to get out and campaign, especially as it is General Election year. We need to win in 2015, that is the objective.

Cooper has left behind a great legacy. But of course the most well known and perhaps the longest lasting will be him making CF #Sound and giving everyone an addiction to KFC.

Exclusive: Oliver Cooper 'Secret Campaign Meeting'

#ThingsElliottSays has been approached by a CF insider who has revealed exclusively to this blog that Oliver Cooper has attended a 'secret meeting' with other leading CF activists. The meeting allegedly focussed on the eternal question of how to get CF out and about in the most marginal seats in the country.

Many CFers have been inspired by the success of the grass-roots phenomenon of RoadTrip2015 and thus the discussion focussed on how CF's campaign operation could be improved taking in mind the lessons learnt by Road Trip. Cooper also brought KFC, no surprises there.

Some things never change.

The story gets even more interesting as the #ThingsElliottSays source has said "there is a rumour that Colonel Cooper is using the experience he gained in his landslide CF election victory last year to help this group. If anyone knows anything about elections it is Cooper. It would also seem he will give this secret group public backing."

#ThingsElliottSays will keep you posted.

End of the USSR

There is another reason to celebrate Boxing Day and it is that 23 years ago today the USSR finally collapsed. The most brutal and oppressive country of all time finally ceased to be on the 26th December 1990. Last night, if you were living 23 years ago, you would have seen Gorbachev announce his office was now defunct and the Soviet Flag flying on top of the Kremlin for the last time. Its just a shame Putin seems to be taking Russia backwards, which is terrible.

I would end this article here but apparently celebrating the end of tyranny is something some people wish to argue about. Looks like some members of the CF national executive might not be so Conservative after all.

At least the CF Cold War had one day of truce.

#YBFX

As you know, if you read my blog regularly or are an ultrasound Conservative, I have been to the YBF conference. Sound!

Unless you are accepting a knighthood from the Queen, you must make sure you are at Churchill College with Donal Blaney and YBF chums for next years conference. The YBF conference is arguably better than the Tory Party one, there is certainly more debate and better food. I really enjoyed YBF and so did everyone else in the NUCA contingent.

So what exactly happened you may ask? Well that would be telling because YBF operates under the Chatham House rule, in other words I cannot relate who said what etc. . However, I have special permission from Mr Donal Blaney to say what did happen and tell you all the fun events (and we're not skipping on the 'sound', 'shame' and 'resign').

The conference kicked off with a great speech, as ever, by the one and only Peter Botting. It really inspired us all to become the revolutionaries he encouraged.

Indeed we were inspired very much by the Botting's revolutionary tweet as he said he would randomly pick out of the people who retweeted the above comment one person who he would give a bottle of something special. Needless to say the Botting revolution was more successful than the Brand one.

Another great discussion of the day was about the moral case to lower taxes. Sound! In my opinion people should keep as much as their money as possible, especially if they have low or middling incomes. Why should we take money off people when it effects their lives noticeably? I was not the only person to believe this.

Never forget this, as was pointed out on the day.

During Friday evening we went to the Thatcher and Churchill archives in the college library. It was great to see documents which made such an impact on the world, for example the original copy of Churchill's Finest Hour speech. There was also a letter sent by Margaret Thatcher replying to a young boy who said he believed her to be a good person like Jesus.

In the Thatcher and Churchill archives.

This tour was universally popular and the YBF crew must be greatly congratulated for there organisation of this.

Following this there was a slap up meal to commemorate the passing of Eric Forth MP, a conviction politician who never backed down from the defence of freedom. Eric Forth MP was a great supporter of YBF in the early days so I am sure, looking down from up above, he would be pleased to see how many people are being taught by YBF to stand up for their values.

At the dinner Jennifer Salisbury Jones, of Bristol, gin and NUS leaving fame, won the Eric Forth Memorial award for her campaign for Bristol Uni to leave the NUS. JSJ has done so well that she got elected to be the NUS rep for the university; I thus think the award is pretty deserved. I think we're all waiting with anticipation for a share of the £50,000 amount of gin that Jenny promised.

The night however was young and so we had the odd refreshments. It was great fun, except the hour ramble around Cambridge David Cowan led me on so we could find so more alcohol after the bar had closed. Resign! But this tweet made us all a lot happier.

Hear Hear! Sound!

The night definitely had its effects on everyone in the morning too.

But we had a really great speaker to cure all our hangovers. Andrew Macleod, fellow Aussie, ex Labour member and former manager at the UN talked to us about the trade vs aid debate. Companies are the ones investing most into the lives of the poorest in the world and doing so much great work. Furthermore companies measure by results and are more effectively using their money to get people jobs and a better life with no poverty. We should be backing 'development investment' not 'development aid'. In my opinion this was the best speech of the conference.

There were other great speakers up to lunchtime with Ian Dale conducting a media training session, Jonathan Isaby who now heads up the Tax Payers Alliance (Sound), and Charlotte Vere who gave a great debate about women in the Conservative Party.

More great speakers were still to come however. The post lunch slot was filled by Robert Halfon MP who inspired us by talking about how we should do to things in the Conservative Party. Firstly, frame our arguments in a language ordinary people can understand to show conservative policies are helping them. Second, we must rename the Conservative Party they Workers Party to accurately portray what our party stands for. Thirdly, take the language of the Left to empathise with people. Rob also pointed out that the Smurfs are conservatives and not Marxists, Pappa Smurf is blue after all.

Comrade Steve Baker then followed to talk to us about sound money. Ultra-Sound!.

Steve really emphasised the problems we're facing in the West. Our economy, despite Gideon trying to help, isn't stopping us from having a 800% predicted national debt in 2040. I would rather have a 1% Conservative government than a 100% Labour one but we're still not doing enough. Freedom is at peril.

Chloe Smith then spoke to us all about how the Conservatives need to engage with young people, something that I think is very important. Chloe talked much about how jobs and speaking to young people is the way forward. No one was brave enough to mention Newsnight to her however.

There were at this time a complaint however, not about the speakers but the views of the stage. This complaint came from NUCA's very tall freshers rep Sam Armstrong on Twitter. Apparently this near 6 foot chap couldn't see past me, although I am 5 foot 4 inches. Perhaps it may be something to do with the fact Sam was rolling around in the seat above me in agony from the night before?

A tub thumping right wing speech was then heard from Mallory Factor. Mr Factor doesn't like the democrats and is a great freedom lover who really got the Yankees going at the conference. shouts of U-S-A were heard quite loudly for a good while.

We then had a talk that really interested #ThingsElliottSays talking about social media and blogging. It was a very good debate but I cannot help thinking some people were distracted.

But onto the second dinner, the Margaret Thatcher banquet. Some people got ready for this in an unusual way.

The dinner started very well with a smashing grace from Robert Halfon MP.

But by far the best bit of the meal was Connor Burns' speech; the best I have heard from him. There is still a moral crusade to bring about classical liberalism and its clear Connor Burns still has this passionate belief. Sound!

Many enjoyed Connor Burns' speech so much that they play Connor Burns bingo.

The meal also contained a few surprises. The biggest of the evening was not the great speeches but the food. I'm sure my sea bass was pink and salmon flavoured. Donal Blaney also was surprised by a huge YBF cake with a sparkling candle being wheeled out to celebrate 10 years of the Young Britons Foundation. All we could say to that was 10 more years.

By far the least surprising event was Oliver Cooper being awarded the Dolphin prize for ultra-soundness. Colonel Cooper is most definitely the first Conservative in charge of CF in many years.

The main prize was still to be announced however, and it was who had won Peter Botting's revolutionary prize. By shear luck the winner was NUCA's own Alex Bright. I hope he saves the expensive wine he received for a party with me in Nottingham. Hint, hint Brighty.

But the night, like the one before was still young, and plots, parties and some solid drinking still needed to take place.

Still everyone was up the next day for another round of speeches.

The Sunday started off with a foreign policy talk on Putin and his Russia. I was very interested by this as the sad thing seems to be that Russia is returning to the bad old days back in the USSR. Thanks goes to Daniel Hamilton who gave this excellent discussion.

But then Ukiper (Shame), Alderman and YBF organiser (Resign) Matt Richardson said something disgusting. Let's just say it involved a big white telephone.

Highlight of the last day was Rory Broomfield from the Freedom Association. This wasn't because of anything he said though. I think you may have pulled Rory.

But there was also love for another YBFer.

Last minute controversy also appeared at the conference with Robert Smith backing Stalin. NUCA's Robert Smith is known for taking up some very strange positions . At the #ThatcherDeabte last academic year Robert clapped for the proposition of this house regrets Mrs Thatcher. Shame!

But sadly all good things must come to an end. The conference finished at 2:30. My thanks goes to Donal Blaney and his tremendous team for an excellent #YBFX and I hope that #YBFXI is just as good if not better. If you're a conservative make sure you come to the YBF conference, if not you will miss the greatest weekend of the year.

So after a quick meal at KFC with the Colonel.

We headed back home. We were all very tired.

But some people spent their time productively on the train home.

As a last point I'm sorry this post has taken 3 days to do. I had to do some other things.

East Midlands CF Conference

Are you busy on Saturday, apart from recovering from a hangover possibly? No, well come to the East Midlands CF Conference to listen and debate with fantastic speakers who are also proper Tories.

Emma McClarkin MEP invites you to a great conference.

This is the 2nd time the East Midlands CF Conference has taken place and this year looks like it may be better than the last. As always the conference is hosted by Emma McClarkin MEP, who has taken some time out from fighting the good cause against a federal European superstate to speak to us. Also there will be Nicky Morgan MP, recently promoted to be Economic Secretary to the Treasury, and Sir Edward Garnier QC MP, not the hair shampoo man but a previous cabinet member and Solicitor General.

Nicky Morgan MP the new face at the Treasury.

As well as these three big names there are several other MPs, MEP candidates and Colonel Cooper. But if that's not enough for those interested in debate there is a free meal, which last year was top notch. Of course there is also copious amounts of freebees, which range from the obvious pens to the not so obvious mints.

The question of the day? Will Colonel Cooper be bringing KFC?

Richard Harris, the East Midlands Chairman, says "The second Annual East Midlands European Youth Conference allows Emma and I, along with the regional executive to showcase the very best of the talent that we have in the East Midlands, You will hear from a former cabinet member; the newly appointed Economic Secretary to the Treasury and your European Candidates for 2014; as well as paying tribute to an extremely inspirational lady, who also hails from here in the East Midlands. Of course I speak of Lady T who would have been 88 this week."

Richard Harris has worked to prepare a really good day.

This is definitely something you should go to and it only costs £5. The event takes place at the Hallmark Inn Hotel, Midland Road, Derby, DE1 2SN on Saturday 10am - 4:30pm. You can get your tickets here https://emcfregionalconference2013.eventbrite.co.uk/ . What's even better for NUCA people is that Alex, the great treasurer of our society, says he will help towards travel cost through reimbursement.

There is no excuse not to come to the East Midlands Conference. I'll be there and so hopefully will you.

#YesOliver

Yesterday Colonel Cooper appeared on BBC Three's Free Speech, the youth (and worse) version of Question Time. The CF Chairman in my opinion did very well, much better than Chairman Hao who said people should get over the deaths of thousands of people in 9/11. Cooper was very good on education and proved very well why we should keep zero contract hours. But what did you think? Here is the Twitter account of #YesOliver.

There was lots of support for #YesOliver, some perhaps too keen.

Sadly there were also some other socialist oppressors of the masses appearing too. Laurie Penny is everything wrong with the oppressive Left, Julian Muppet (as he is well known as in Cambridgeshire) signed up to a lot of  Laurie's ideas and Katie Hopkins was right often but as mad as usual.

Overall Oliver did very well because, as he says, he was very SOUND.

It is thus fair to say Oliver's performance was well liked, but not just for his #sound ideas.

Before we kick off however we must mention that BBC Free Speech gave others a chance to shine.

The first of the debate was on zero-contract hours and Oliver did fairly well I showing that these should be kept because only 16% of people think they don't get enough hours. They are a good way for people to work.

Next was the education debate. Oliver spoke well against communist poster girl Laurie Penny who was doing down Michael Gove the saviour of children up and down the country.

Next was drugs. The Colonel is famous for being a libertarian but what would he say on drug policy? Wisely Cooper doesn't talk about stupid things about drugs policy because in reality no one really cares that much. There are more important areas to reform.

And so with all the debates over the results from a poll of who preformed best was released, don't ask me how this is measured it seemed pretty arbitrary at some points.

 Some people however disagreed.

I think Oliver was very good for Conservative Future let's hope our 18,000 strong group continues to grow.

But let's not rose tint things Oliver did get some stick from those who said #NoOliver.

Never would have thought Colonel Cooper would be called a hack and accused of following Dave completely.

It's not that arbitrary considering how all benefits revolve around the age of 25.

Work for the Dole in Australia and America led to a drop of over half in the unemployment rating. Compassionate Conservatives are helping young people get the experience to get jobs.

Very odd concept of privatisation when schools are free and use state money. Sounds nationalised to me. Also I do hate incoherent Leftie attack lines, at least get the bare minimum of facts right.

Another classic Leftie line, "it's Thatcher's fault". Why don't we talk about dumbing down of GCSE's over a 13 year long Labour government which was pointed out as being to the determent of children recently by the OECD.

The hard core libertarians also got restless with Oliver Cooper.

So there you are. Oliver did very well and thus I am saying #YesOliver.
